Visiting Cap Spartel & The Caves of Hercules: Timing & Tips
Where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Tips on visiting the Cap Spartel lighthouse, entering the Phoenician sea window, and finding the best sunset views in Tangier.

The Mythological Meeting of Two Oceans
Cap Spartel is mainland Africa's extreme northwestern point. The historic 1864 lighthouse overlooks the exact boundary where the deep blue Atlantic Ocean converges with the calmer Mediterranean Sea.
The Caves of Hercules (Grottes d'Hercule)
Located 5 km south of Cap Spartel, these ancient limestone sea caverns feature two openings: one toward land used by Phoenicians, and one toward the Atlantic shaped like an inverted map of Africa.
- Entrance fee: ~60 MAD (~€6) per person.
- Best time to visit: Morning before 11:30 AM or late afternoon for sunset light.
- Photography tip: Stand 10 meters back from the sea opening for the perfect silhouette shot.
